Balance your Body, Mind and Spirit: A Bandha Workshop with Eric Powell
For those familiar with Yoga, bandhas are an integral part of the practice. Mula, Uddiyana, and Jalandhara are three major bandhas related to asana and, combined, form Maha Bandha. From a philosophical point of view, they generate heat that cleanses the energy channels. They also help to lift the energy upward as well as control it’s downward flow. From the physical perspective of the practice, bandhas are a means of stabilizing the pelvis, creating core strength and help to maintain proper form and alignment. From a more psychological viewpoint, they aid in developing focus and concentration by enhancing our awareness and observational skills.
The workshop will focus primarily on both the physical and psychological aspects of bandha work. We will use props and variations on certain postures to understand how to access the musculature involved to find and maintain these ‘locks’. Once familiar with the process, we will explore some common poses and how to find the bandha in each posture.

Eric began his yoga practice 30 years ago in Chicago with a wonderful teacher, Suddha Weixler. The studio offered a wide array of classes and styles which continue to inform his teaching. Ashtanga, Iyengar, Hatha all have made an impact and he is grateful for the experience and exposure that he received at the center. From Chicago, Eric moved to New York City where he met and became both a friend and student of Manju Jois. As his practice has evolved over the years he found himself studying with yet another student of Krishnamacharya, Srivatsa Ramaswami, whose style of yoga he now practices.
